THE LAST OCEAN

2012 / Acryl / 250 x 200 cm

At the ends of the world – rough and inhospitable for humans – animals have their refuges and even endangered species can again reach large populations. Largely covered by ice, the Antarctic Ross Sea is such a precious habitat. Nevertheless, negotiations on its protection took a long time until all the 24 countries of the CCAMLR (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) and the European Union finally agreed on the protection of this last pristine marine ecosystem in 2016. An area of 1.6 square kilometres was declared the largest marine protected area worldwide. In “The Last Ocean”, Vierad visualises the liveliness of the icy waters, her commitment to the cause and her relief about the developments.
